Machines That Knit!

This week we bring you big machines that make wire meshes and netting and for this, our Chinese translator traveled to Johannesburg to one of the well-known producers of wire and steel products. Here is our story.

In principle, a netting machine takes steel wires and “knit”  them into wire mesh sheet. The sheet is then rolled up and cut to various lengths. Depending on the size of the mesh, different gauges of steel wire are used. Before the netting machine can get to work, steel wires need to be loaded onto the machine, and that means passing the wires under the machine and into the tubes and boy, there are many, many tubes! For this reason, setting up a netting machine can take up to half a day or longer.

From the get-go, our translator kept the communication flowing between the Chinese technician and the managers, engineers, and technicians from the client. This means prompt and accurate translation from Chinese to English when the Chinese technician speaks, and English to Chinese when other parties respond. Things were going well with the commissioning, and then a disaster struck – one of the gears was found to be faulty. This brought the entire project to a halt and everyone into the boardroom on a tele-conference with the supplier in China.

Fortunately, our Chinese translator is well versed in machinery and in handling sticky situation such as this. Our client reached an amicable solution with their supplier, even though it meant suspending the commissioning of the machine.

Fitting a new piece of machinery in your factory is a big job and many things can go wrong. When they do, you want a service provider that can offer the help you need. In English to Chinese translation, this means someone who understands and speaks machinery. Until next time…
